I am amazed to see all of the information out their that will help parents in parenting their children. This information is readily available but my only concern about or advocacy wiki is that the parents that are going to use it and look at it are the ones that really don't need the help. Its the parents that need help that don't think they do or are scared to ask for help. I want to know how to we get to those parents???

Partnerships...invite them to become involved in their comfort area...ask them to cut out letters..or prepare something for your class. Many parents who are not involved are quiet for a reason...usually their own memories of school and lack of success....
How can you change it....think of a plan and go for it.

Good question - Cheryl

Jodi - good suggestions I've used some of them and they do work.

I have also had parents that are so overwhelmed providing the basic needs for their children that they just can not do one more thing. Food, shelter, and clothes concerns take them working 2 or more jobs and they do not have time to volunteer. So getting back to Cheryl's question - sometimes there really are no easy answers. I quess each case is different and understanding is the key for all parties. That is easier said then done.

Something I've thought about is, are their grants available where lower socioeconomic families could be provided with personal computers/internet access for their home? I'm sure that the schools or teachers would have to initiate this, but if families had access to computers and could access the internet at times that are best for the, maybe they would be able and willing to view suggestions and helpful websites. Also, sites available in other languages for families speaking very little or no English.

I know that when I was in Title I, we had computers for check out. Unfortunately, I don't think that they connected to the internet. But that would be something to look into. That would be a great grant Wendy! I agree with what you are saying though Cheryl. It is hard to reach those parents. But like Jodi suggested, offer them a place in your classroom. That would be the first step.
